The Billy Boy Paint Book
In 2002, I drew obsessively from this 1947 proto-cold-war-infused American coloring book, "The Billy Boy Paint Book".
I was absorbing a calligraphic language and I began reconfiguring this language according to my own visual impulses, in response to what was happening in the world.
CNN, the New York Times, commercial television, trips to K-Mart, post-9/11 mass hysteria--it all gradually made its way in to the work: "translated", so to speak, by means of this calligraphic language, through my drawing hand.
Leonardo, Hiroshige, Michelangelo, and Goya cheered me on.....
